New Travel Writing Course This Summer
I recently finalized plans to teach a new travel writing course this summer at UC San Diego Extension in La Jolla. I’m excited about it. I don’t think such a course has been taught in the program, with a strong focus on literary travel writing, in particular. We’re going to focus on how to write narrative stories and essays, and we’ll explore strategies for publishing such writing. (Markets do exist, but it’s highly competitive and tough, and not terribly lucrative; you really have to do it for the love of it.) We’ll also read lots of literary travel writing and discuss it, including Paul Theroux’s classic book, “The Old Patagonian Express.” More details coming soon.
